To commemorate PCOS Awareness Month, OZiva recently conducted a national survey. The survey revealed that awareness about PCOS had increased to 70% in 2022 from 61% in 2021 but highlighted the stigma that women with PCOS and similar health issues continue to face.

The survey included 2756 people, with 1211 males and 1545 women participating nationwide. Reports showed that more than 50% of women were being ridiculed for being obese, 48% felt embarrassed due to acne, 49% were demotivated due to facial hair, and 30% had trouble getting pregnant. Despite their physical and mental stress, 36% of women have never shared or sought help because of the fear, embarrassment, and criticism connected with these concerns.

According to Mittal Patel, Category Head - Women′s Health, OZiva, PCOS causes physical and mental distress. It is crucial to normalize the fact that womens health issues can have a variety of effects on the female body, create a more compassionate environment, assist women in managing these conditions and moving on in life without having to endure shame.

In India, 1 in 5 women has PCOS. Although the precise etiology of PCOS is unknown, genetics and abnormal hormone levels have been linked to the condition. Despite greater knowledge of the disorder, there are still misconceptions about PCOS′s symptoms and treatment.

60% of the female respondents said it is easier to open up about their health problems when their partners, families, and friends are understanding. In India, the attitude regarding women′s health needs to alter immediately. This can be dealt better if there is more acceptance and understanding. (ETHealthWorld September 10, 2022)
